What is PCOD?

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is one of the most common hormonal disorders affecting young women today.

It mostly affects young women in their fertility period around 15 to 44 years of age.

It causes a range of distressing symptoms like –

ü  Irregular periods,

ü  Acne,

ü  Unwanted hair growth, on face and body.

ü  Weight gain — often accompanied by emotional stress and fertility issues.

While modern medicine offers symptomatic treatments, Ayurveda approaches PCOD holistically, focusing on correcting the root imbalances in the body.

🌿 How Ayurveda Understands PCOD

In Ayurveda, PCOD is closely related to a condition called "Aarthava Kshaya" (reduction or suppression of menstruation or what you call as PERIODS) and is also linked with "Granthi" (cystic growths). The core imbalance is often in the Kapha and Vata doshas, affecting the reproductive system (Artavavaha srotas).

Key Ayurvedic Concepts in PCOD:

ü  Kapha aggravation leads to blockages and overgrowth in the ovarian channels, causing cyst formation.

ü  Vata imbalance disrupts hormonal regulation and the timely movement of menstrual flow.

ü  Pitta dosha, when involved, contributes to inflammation, acne, and mood swings.

ü  Srotorodha (obstruction in channels) and Agni Mandya (low digestive & metabolic fire) are considered primary causes behind PCOD in Ayurveda.

Common Causes of PCOD in Modern Lifestyle (Ayurveda agrees with many)

Even though PCOD is increasing due to environmental and hormonal factors, Ayurveda says that our lifestyle choices are a major root cause.

Common Contributing Factors:

ü  Excess intake of fast food, sugar, cold drinks (Kapha-aggravating diet) – yes! Jaggery and other form of sugars also contribute to this causes. So no form of sugar is completely safe dear.

ü  Late-night sleep, irregular routines (disrupting biological rhythms) – Your body needs 8 hours of undisturbed sleep. Try to sleep as early as 10pm.

ü  Sedentary lifestyle and lack of regular exercise – like sitting on chair for long hours due to office work or other causes.

ü  High stress, anxiety, and emotional suppression

ü  Overuse of hormonal pills or emergency contraceptives – do not mess with your biological build.

ü  All of these lead to Agnimandya (metabolic dysfunction) and dosha imbalance, which eventually results in irregular ovulation and cyst formation.

Most Common Symptoms of PCOD

Many women experience multiple symptoms, but the intensity varies.

🌸 5 Best Ayurvedic Ways to Manage PCOD Naturally

Instead of suppressing symptoms, Ayurveda aims to restore balance through diet, lifestyle, herbs, and internal detox.

1. Balance Agni (Digestive Fire) – The First Step

PCOD always begins with low digestive/metabolic fire (Agni Mandya), which causes Ama (toxins) to accumulate in the reproductive channels.

Tips:

ü  Eat warm, freshly prepared food

ü  Avoid cold, heavy, oily, and junk food, highly processed food.

ü  Use herbs like Trikatu (dry ginger, black pepper, long pepper) to increase Agni.

ü  Drink warm water with lemon or jeera daily (do not mix honey in warm water)

2. Herbal Support to Regulate Hormones and Ovulation

Ayurveda uses specific herbs that correct hormonal pathways, improve egg maturation, and restore regular cycles.

🪻 Top Ayurvedic Herbs for PCOD:

A.    Shatavari – Restores hormonal balance and supports fertility (Best friend of woman).Taking a teaspoon of Shatavari with warm milk at bed time can increase fertility, calm anxity, mood swings and balance hormones.

B.  Ashoka – Balances estrogen and strengthens uterus. (Can be consumed in the form of Kashayam or Arishta)

C. Guduchi (Giloy) – Detoxifier and immune modulator. ( Can be taken as Kashayam, Powder, Tablet, Extract and what not…)

D.  Lodhra – Controls bleeding and helps in cyst shrinkage. (Very helpful in controlling excessive bleeding, available in the form of Aasava)

(Always take herbs under Ayurvedic supervision.)

3. Virechana & Detox Therapies (Panchakarma)

One of the best methods to treat PCOD from its root is detoxification through Panchakarma therapies:

Virechana (Purgation) – Cleanses Pitta-Kapha from the body.

Basti (Medicated enema) – Regulates Vata and improves cycle regularity.

Udvartana (Dry powder massage) – Helps you loosing that extra pounds and balances Kapha.

🔁 These therapies help cleanse blocked srotas, reduce cysts, and normalize hormones over time.

4. Exercise & Yoga to Reduce Kapha and Insulin Resistance

Regular movement is essential in PCOD to break the cycle of weight gain and hormone imbalance.

Recommended Yogasanas:

        i.            Surya Namaskar: Begin with ten slow cycles and try to hold each pose for 5 seconds.

ii.            Bhadrasana or Butterfly pose: Begin with holding the posture for around a minute.

iii.            Malasana (Yoni mudra): Begin with holding the posture for around a minute.

iv.            Dhanurasana: This might take a little practice. Be easy on yourself and listen to your body. Begin with around 15 seconds.

      v.            Nadi Shodhana & Bhramari Pranayama: Very important to control your breath and mind.

vi.            Brisk walking, dancing, or any joyful movement daily helps reduce Kapha and Medo dhatu (fat tissue).

5. Emotional & Mental Wellness – Often Ignored, But Crucial

PCOD isn’t just physical — stress and repressed emotions impact Apana Vata and Manovaha srotas (mind channels).

Include:

ü  Regular sleep cycle.

ü  Journaling or talking therapy (often with your close ones).

ü  Satvik food & positive environment.

ü  Herbs like Brahmi or Jatamansi for emotional balance.

Ayurveda treats mind and body as one. Healing begins when both are in sync.
