Viruddha Ahara, 10 wrong food combinations.
Very
common Viruddha Aahara (incompatible food combinations) people unknowingly
follow in modern times, which are discouraged in Ayurveda due to their
potential to disturb digestion, create Ama (toxins), and cause long-term health
issues.
10
Common Viruddha Aahara Practices in Modern Life
1.
Milk with Fruits (especially citrus and sour fruits)
Example:
Milkshakes with banana, orange, strawberry, etc.
Why it's
Viruddha: Milk and fruits have opposite properties — milk is heavy and cold,
while fruits are light and sometimes acidic. This combination can lead to fermentation,
bloating, and skin issues.
A very
common mal-practise is fruit custard, or smoothies with milk and fruits, which
initially appear very delicious and healthy but in long run can cause lot more
harm than good.
2.
Milk with Salt or Salty Foods
Example:
Drinking milk after eating salty snacks or consuming dishes like Paneer with
salty gravies.
Why it's
Viruddha: Salt and milk are considered incompatible; combining them may cause
skin problems like vitiligo or other metabolic imbalances.
Next
before eating your salty Matharis or Papadis, think about having something like
Makhanas etc.
3.
Curd (Yogurt) with Fish or Meat
Example:
Curd-based marinades or Raita with fish/chicken.
Why it's
Viruddha: Both are heating and heavy, leading to toxicity in the body and skin
disorders over time.
4.
Fruit after Meals
Example:
Eating fruits as dessert right after lunch or dinner.
Why it's
Viruddha: Fruits digest quickly, whereas meals take longer. This leads to
fermentation and bloating — a classic Agni-Virodha (digestive fire
contradiction).
So
combining mangoes with or after meal is not a very great idea.
5.
Cold Drinks with or Immediately After Meals
Example:
Drinking cold water, soda, or juice during or right after meals.
Why it's
Viruddha: It reduces Agni (digestive fire), weakening digestion and causing ama
(toxins). It is just like pouring a glass full of water on burning coal, because
if the Agni is good, it will digest everything but if it is weak then it will
eventually extinguish the fire (lead to toxins accumulation in the body).
6. Ghee
with Honey in Equal Quantities
Example:
Mixing ghee and honey in equal quantity as a health remedy.
Why it's
Viruddha: Equal quantity of honey and ghee is considered toxic, creating
harmful free radicals in the system.
Individually
both are considered to be very healthy and nourishing with devine properties
but when mixed in equal quantities, leads to change in their qualities and
properties which has been mentioned as ‘Visha’ in Ayurveda.
7.
Heating Honey
Example:
Using honey in baking, cooking, or adding it to hot tea.
Why it's
Viruddha: Heating honey turns it into a slow poison (Visha), forming Ama and
disturbing tissuesIt is a very common practice and it’s in trend to mix honey
with warm water and take it on empty stomach, but an ayurvdic physician will
never promote such kind of malpractices.
8.
Combining Milk with Fermented or Sour Foods
Example:
Drinking milk with pickles, yogurt, or fermented dosa/idli batter.
Why it's
Viruddha: Sour and fermented items disturb the nature of milk and can cause
digestive and skin disorders. . Milk when combined with these can cause severe
bloating to some people. While some people with these habits never know why
they are getting so many skin issues even after taking so much of skin care
measures.
9.
Eating Stale or Reheated Food
Example:
Reheating last night’s pizza, curry, or rice.
Why it's
Viruddha: Reheated food loses its Prana (life energy) and creates Ama, causing
sluggish digestion and poor vitality.
Reheated
food is considered to develop Tamasik properties which is not a very good idea
to consume, if you are already dealing with mental stress and anxieties.
10. Tea
or Coffee Immediately After Meals
Example:
Drinking tea right after lunch or dinner.
Why it's
Viruddha: Tea/Coffee suppress digestive enzymes and disturb nutrient
absorption, especially iron and calcium. It may help you stay awake but at what
cost? Not a great idea.
